Best Buddies was founded in the United States in 1993 and has expanded worldwide. As a participating school, the University of Waterloo Best Buddies Chapter's goal is to make our community more inclusive and accepting of people with intellectual disabilities.
The club consists of Peer Buddies and Executive members. Peer Buddies are students paired in a one-to-one friendship with an adult who has an intellectual disability (called a Buddy). Peer Buddy and Buddy matches are made for at least one academic year and made based off similar interests between the pair. Executive members consist of a President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Junior Executives.
Peer Buddies and Buddies meet and connect virtually or in-person once a week. At this time, our Chapter holds group events once a month, either in-person or virtually.

At Waterloo, Black athletes feel as if the only space they feel comfortable in is either on the hardwood floor or the football/soccer field. So basically Black Athletes are only comfortable in their area of specialty, which is "sports".
This is why we have created BLAC. BLAC will be a club that will allow Black Athletes to do more than just throw a football, run the track, or dribble a ball. BLAC will be a club that allows Black athletes to get comfortable by doing the uncomfortable.

It actively encourages students to participate in counselling, peer support groups, workshops, and other relevant community human services to grow themselves. Breaking Barriers seeks collaboration with on-campus and community groups/organizations. It accommodates students' needs for language translation. Moreover, this club inspires students to get involved in the local community and to grow to become a leader or advocate rather than a "survivor" in the new culture.
